Louis Reichardt has experienced both success and tragedy in his efforts to climb the world's highest summits. Here he recalls his spectacular ascents of the two highest mountains in the world. In 1978, he reached the summit of K2 making him the first American ever to do so. Five years later, he joined a team that reached the peak of Mount Everest via the challenging east face, a feat that has never been repeated. Reichardt discusses the impact of mountaineering on his scientific career and the love of adventure and discovery that is shared by scientists and climbers.
The early influences of her mother and uncle set Lydia Villa-Komaroff on the path to becoming a scientist. Along the way, numerous other mentors influenced her decision to obtain her PhD in biology and also taught her important life lessons.

Rob Phillips is Professor of Applied Physics and Bioengineering at The California Institute of Technology. His research focuses on understanding the physical basis of biological phenomena. Phillips is a co-author of the recently published textbook " Physical Biology of the Cell". Prior to the privilege of a life in science, he spent seven years of travel, self-study and work as an electrician.
When Ramirez was a child, his family moved from northern California to rural Mexico. He did not attend high school. After 4 years of working on the family ranch, Ramirez returned to the USA to resume his education. With perseverance and encouraging mentors, he obtained his GED, his Bachelor's degree, and ultimately a PhD degree. Ramirez demonstrates that you can become a successful scientist even if the path is neither easy nor direct.
About the speaker: Robert Ramirez recently became Associate Dean of Science and Engineering at San Francisco State University where he enjoys interacting with a diverse group of colleagues and students. He is also Professor of Cellular and Molecular Biology and his lab studies novel responses to osmotic stress in yeast.
Pamela Ronald (UC Davis) Part 1: Sustainable agriculture
In Part 1 of her lecture, Ronald emphasizes the importance of developing sustainable agricultural practices that will allow the world's population to be fed without destroying the Earth. Ronald demonstrates that modern genetics approaches have facilitated development of new crop varieties that can increase crop yields while reducing insecticide use. She proposes that the judicious incorporation of two important strands of agriculture—agricultural biotechnology and agroecological practices—is key to helping feed the growing population and she provides compelling examples to support her stand.
