华人科学家李红《Nature》《Science》:生物结构揭示重要功能

        对于一位科学家而言,能在同行评价审核的杂志上发表文章意味着专业同行高水平的评价,而如果这本杂志恰巧是《自然》或者《科学》这两个世界顶级的科学刊物之一的话更加说明了对这位科学家研究成果的肯定。来自佛罗里达州州立大学(Florida  State  University)分子生物物理学院(Institute  of   Molecular   Biophysics)的李红就完成了一项得到双倍肯定的工作:在Nature和Science杂志同期发表论文。

        在Science这篇文章中Li等人发现了一个Archaeglobus  fulgidus的RNA剪接内切酶(RNA  splicing  endonuclease),为了解所谓的“生物分子”(即有机分子,包括蛋白质,核苷酸等)结构提出了新的观点见解。这项研究主要是利用了X射线结晶方法(X-ray  crystallography)解析生物分子的三维结构,Li表示,“知晓生物分子的形状以及相关的化学性质是了解这些生物分子如何维持细胞生命活动的基础。这可以作个类比,人类心脏解剖研究可以帮助了解心脏的功能,同样对于生物分子的‘解剖’可以加深其功能的了解”。  

        而在另一篇文章中,Li和来自PTC  Therapeutics(一家生物制药公司)的技术人员讨论了有关内含子结构剪接的相关发现:通过对真核tRNA-splicing  endonuclease的分析,发现了一个以前从未发现的对于其催化作用有影响的活性位点。

        这些发现可以帮助科学家们了解细胞中分子识别以及相互作用的基本化学与物理机理,FSU的Timothy  Logan教授认为这项工作是为理解生物分子功能提供了重要信息,而且也为许多健康问题提出了新的治疗方案。
