A new species and two new records of Ulocladium from China LIU Hui-Mei1,2 ZHANG Tian-Yu1* 1Department of Plant Pathology, Shandong Agricultural University, Tai’an 271018, China 2Huangdao Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, Qingdao 266555, China Abstract: A new species and two new Chinese records in the genus Ulocladium from soil are reported. New species is Ulocladium leve, and the new records are U. alternariae and U. consortiale. Latin diagnosis of the new species is presented. Holotype specimen (dried culture) of the new species and dried cultures of two new records are deposited in the Herbarium of Shandong Agricultural University: Plant Pathology (HSAUP). Key words: Ulocladium leve, U. alternariae, U. consortiale, soil fungi Ulocladium leve H. M. Liu & T. Y. Zhang sp. nov. Coloniae pulveratae, atroolivaceo-brunneae, in PCA celeriter crescentes, post 7 dies ad 24℃ 3-5cm diametrum attingentes. Mycelium partim superficiale et partim immersum in substrato, ex hyphis septatis, ramosis, pallide brunneis vel flavo-brunneis, 2-4.5µm crassis compositum. Conidiophora erecta vel ascendentia, simplicia vel ramosa, geniculata, laevia, usque ad 2.5-5.5µm crassa, plerumque 15-75µm longa. Conidia solitaria, obovoidea, ellipsoidea vel subglobosa, initio verrucosa, demum laevia, ad basim conica, ad apicem rotundata, septis transversalibus 1-3, septis longitudinalibus 1-3, septis irregulariter obliquis 1-5, 16-31.5 × 11.5-20µm, med. 22.5 × 16µm, L/W=1.1-1.8, med. 1.4. Fig. 2 Conidia and conidiophores of Ulocladium alternariae (Cooke) E. G. Simmons (ex HSAUP031671)
Colonies powdery, dark olivaceous-brown, same in reverse, growing rapidly on PCA, reaching a diam. of 3-5cm at 24℃ in 7 days. Mycelium partly superficial, partly immersed, composed of light golden, pale brown or nearly hyaline, smooth, septate, branched, 2-4.5µm wide hyphae. Conidiophores produced laterally or terminally on the hyphae, erect or ascending, simple or branched, geniculate, pale brown, smooth, 0-3-septate, 6-50 × 2.5-5.5µm. Conidia acrogenous or acropleurogenous, solitary, ovoid or broadly ellipsoidal, sometimes subspherical, apex rounded, base rounded or broadly conical, sometimes with a minute apiculus, golden brown, slightly verrucose when young, pale brown to brown, smooth in mature, with 1-3 transverse septa, 1-3 longitudinal septa and 1-5 irregularly oblique septa, often forming a Y-form septation at the upper part, pseudorostra have never been seen, 16-31.5 × 11.5-20µm, av. 22.5 × 16µm, L/W=1.1-1.8, av.1.4.
Habitat: Isolated from soil, Bengbu, Anhui Province, 4 Oct. 2003, coll. H. M. Liu, HSAUP031693 (dried culture, similarly hereinafter), holotype.
