The enzyme ATP synthase produces the universal energy molecule ATP in organisms ranging from bacteria to humans. Two papers in February's Nature Structural and Molecular Biology by Manuel Diez et al. and Takayuki Nishizaka et al. report major advances in understanding how this tiny motor works. Demonstrated for the first time is the direction of proton-gradient-driven rotation, and the generation of ATP from forced rotation of the motor. Alan Senior and Joachim Weber review these findings in a News and Views article.
